ABOUT MULCH.........Hardwood Mulch is the basic type of mulch sold in our area. A quality mulch is generally made from by-products of the lumber industry. Specifically aged hardwood bark. DON'T be fooled! While ground and chipped up trees and limbs may be advertised or sold as mulch, if not aged and composted properly, can be harmful and toxic to plants and shrubs. Some producers only use or add shredded pallets and yard waste to hardwood mulch to increase profits.
QUALITIES
The longer the bark is aged, the darker it gets. Most bark mulch producers only shred and screen the bark once. The screen size determines how fine or coarse it will be. "Double" and "Triple" ground are terms used by consumers and do not represent how mulch is really made. Proper composting and aging produces a mulch rich in nutrients with a dark brown to black color.
